To Treat or Not to Treat

While most upper respiratory infections caused by viruses can be healed without antibiotics, an appropriate antibiotic is usually recommended to treat bacterial infections. By screening you for 15 of the most common viruses and bacteria, this test can be instrumental in helping you decide whether your next step should be seeing a physician for antibiotics or focusing on treatments that many ease your symptoms.

If you are immunocompromised, have risk factors for severe illness, experience concerning symptoms, or have any questions, it’s important to consult your physician—regardless of your test results.

What It Is

The IC Labs Rapid 15-in-1 Respiratory Virus and Bacteria PCR Test is a polymerase chain reaction test that uses a sample taken from a nasopharyngeal swab for simultaneous, qualitative detection and identification of the ribonucleic acid (RNA) from the following viruses and bacteria:

  1. Adenovirus
  2. Coronaviruses 229E, HKU1, NL63, and OC43
  3. COVID-19 (Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2))
  4. Human metapneumovirus
  5. Human rhinovirus/enterovirus
  6. Influenza A virus
  7. Influenza A virus A/H1-2009
  8. Influenza A virus A/H3
  9. Influenza B virus
  10. Parainfluenza viruses 1, 2, 3, and 4 (HPIV-1, HPIV-2, HPIV-3, and HPIV-4)
  11. Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)
  12. Bordetella parapertussis
  13. Bordetella pertussis
  14. Chlamydia pneumoniae
  15. Mycoplasma pneumoniae

If this rapid diagnostic test is positive for any of the viruses or bacteria listed above, it means that it has detected the virus’ or bacteria’s genetic material and the person is CURRENTLY infected with that virus or bacteria. Once the infection is gone, the RNA disappears, and that test will be negative. It is possible for more than one of these tests to be positive. This is known as a co-infection.

A positive test is considered very accurate, but it’s possible to be infected with any of these viruses or bacteria and have a negative RNA result. No test is 100% accurate, so it’s important to follow up with your physician if symptoms do not clear as expected.

A negative result may mean your symptoms were caused by a pathogen not included in the panel of tests or you have a condition not caused by a virus or bacteria.

This test is appropriate for humans of all ages, including infants, who exhibit symptoms primarily related to respiratory tract infections.

We utilize the BIOFIRE® SPOTFIRE® Respiratory Sore Throat (R/ST) Panel Assay.

What It Is Not

The IC Labs Rapid 15-in-1 Respiratory Virus and Bacteria PCR Test is not an antibody test. It does not reveal if you have already been exposed to an infection by detecting the presence of antibodies in a person’s blood or serum. Antibody testing is not typically used to diagnose a current infection as it takes the body some time to produce antibodies. Although it can be performed in minutes, it is not a rapid antigen test.

It will not tell you how likely you are to catch or spread respiratory pathogens, or how serious your illness might be.

This test is not a respiratory infection culture. It does not test for Streptococcus dysgalactiae (Group C/G Strep) or Streptococcus pyogenes (Group A Strep). If you suspect strep throat, and are not concerned about whooping cough (Bordetella parapertussis or pertussis), consider our Rapid 15-in-1 Sore Throat Virus and Bacteria PCR Test.
