This Rapid Lipid Panel (Cholesterols, Triglycerides + Glucose) Test provides a quantitative determination of glucose, total cholesterol, HDL (high density lipoprotein) cholesterol, and triglycerides in venous whole blood and capillary whole blood from the fingertip. It also provides estimated values for LDL (low density lipoprotein) cholesterol.

LDL Blood Testing

LDL or Low-Density Lipoprotein blood testing measures the amount of harmful cholesterol present in the body. The test helps to diagnose and monitor the risk of heart disease and cardiovascular disease. Too much LDL can increase the risk of heart attack or stroke. High LDL levels are associated with atherosclerosis, which is caused by a buildup of plaque on artery walls, restricting blood flow and leading to cardiovascular diseases.

Blood Triglycerides Testing

Blood triglycerides testing is utilized extensively in the diagnosis and treatment of a variety of medical conditions, including diabetes mellitus, nephrosis, liver obstruction, and other disorders related to lipid or hormone metabolism. In particular, these analyzes can detect lipid-related abnormalities that may be indicative of health issues such as abnormal triglyceride levels which can contribute to an elevated risk for cardiovascular disease. Besides its role in diagnosing various diseases, measuring triglycerides is also an important part of monitoring and managing treatment outcomes in patients with metabolic disorders or endocrine imbalances.

Glucose Testing

Glucose is a key marker for the assessment of carbohydrate metabolism disorders, such as diabetes mellitus, neonatal hypoglycemia, and idiopathic hypoglycemia, and it can provide valuable insight into the potential presence of pancreatic islet cell carcinoma. Accurate evaluation of glucose levels along with other indicators, such as insulin and glycosylated hemoglobin levels, can help assess the severity of carbohydrate-related diseases like diabetes mellitus.

IC Labs utilizes the Henry Schein Lipid Panel/eGLU Test on the CardioChek Plus analyzer. This CLIA-waived test uses reflectance photometry and electrochemical biosensor technology to measure an enzymatic chemical reaction.

This test does not require fasting. However, fasting is recommended for best accuracy. Fasting means not eating or drinking anything but water for 9 to 12 hours prior to the test.

What this Rapid Lipid Panel Test Is Not

The test is not intended for newborn infants, critically ill patients, patients with severe dehydration or patients in a hyperosmolar state (with or without ketosis).

This test is specific for glucose. Other sugars or reducing substances such as ascorbic acid at normal blood concentrations have no significant effect on test results. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) and dopamine may interfere causing the test result to be higher than the actual glucose. Hematocrit values above 55% or lower than 30% may incorrectly lower the glucose result. Severe dehydration and excessive water loss may produce falsely low glucose results.

Extremely high doses of ascorbic acid (Vitamin C), dopamine and methyldopa may impact the results of all the lipids.

Cosmetics such as hand creams or lotions often contain glycerol. Use of these products may cause inaccurate results.

After cleaning your fingertip with an alcohol swab, the lab tech will puncture the skin on the side of your fingertip with a sterile lancet. They will collect a few drops of blood using a capillary blood collector and a test strip.

If you choose to wait, you may receive a print out of your results in as little as 15 minutes. Otherwise, you will receive an email when your test results are available in our Patient Portal, usually in about 15 minutes.
