Your throat is sore and you wonder why. It could be one (or more) of several pathogens that cause sore throats, pharyngitis and/or hoarseness – anything from strep to the flu to the common cold. The key to effective treatment lies in identifying the exact cause. The sooner you know, the sooner you can begin the right care and speed up recovery.

Our 15-in-1 Sore Throat and Bacteria PCR Test can help you uncover the source of your sore throat in as little as 30 minutes. By accurately identifying the culprit from a broad range of pathogens, you can start targeted treatment without delay, putting you on the path to relief faster.

Our Most Comprehensive Sore Throat and Strep Test

The 15-in-1 Sore Throat Virus and Bacteria PCR Test identifies 15 key viruses and bacteria that can cause sore throats, including:

  • Two types of streptococcus (strep A and C/G)
  • Adenovirus
  • Rhinovirus/enterovirus
  • Two types of pneumonia
  • Coronaviruses (229E, HKU1, NL63, OC43)
  • Influenzas A and B, and Parainfluenzas
  • SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19)
  • Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV)
  • Human metapnemovirus (hMPV)

Results in as Little as 30 Minutes

This test delivers fast and reliable results, empowering effective care and treatment through advanced PCR (polymerase chain reaction) technology—widely regarded as the gold standard in pathogen detection. Offering the convenience of same-day results, it is the same type of test commonly performed by healthcare providers and medical facilities. While no pathogen test can guarantee 100% accuracy, this method ensures the highest level of precision available.

The Dangers of Not Treating a Sore Throat

A sore throat can be more than just an annoyance—it might signal an underlying infection that needs attention. Identifying the cause is crucial to ensure the right treatment. A quick test can determine which pathogen caused your sore throat, helping guide effective care. Ignoring it may lead to complications, such as:

  1. Worsening of the infection – Untreated infections can spread to other areas, like the sinuses or ears.
  2. Rheumatic fever – If caused by strep, it could lead to this serious condition affecting the heart, joints, and nervous system.
  3. Abscess formation – A pocket of pus (peritonsillar abscess) may form near the tonsils, which can be painful and require drainage.
  4. Breathing difficulties – Severe swelling in the throat could obstruct airflow, making it harder to breathe.
  5. Delayed recovery – Without proper identification, ineffective treatments could prolong discomfort or complications.

Testing to pinpoint the cause of your sore throat empowers you to know if you should seek treatment from your healthcare provider to get you back to feeling better, faster.

NOTE: If you are concerned about whooping cough, our Rapid 15-in-1 Respiratory Virus and Bacteria PCR Test may be a better test for you.

Fast and Easy Sore Throat and Strep Testing

Schedule Your Appointment

Appointments are available every 15 minutes 5 days a week. Schedule your appointment below to see current availability.

Physician referrals are NOT required.

Testing Takes Just a Few Moments

The lab tech will start by gently insert a soft, thin swab into your nostril for a few seconds to gather the sample. It may feel ticklish or slightly uncomfortable, cause your eyes to tear or cause you to cough, but it’s done in moments. A second swab will be used to obtain a sample from the back of your throat. No needles or blood work required.

Get Your Results

You may wait and we will provide a print out of the results in as little as 30 minutes or, if you choose to leave, test results are often available via email and our Patient Portal in about 45 minutes, but typically by the end of the day.

What It Is

The IC Labs Rapid 15-in-1 Sore Throat Virus and Bacteria PCR Test uses two samples to perform two tests: a polymerase chain reaction test and an antigen test.

PCR Test

The sample taken from a throat swab provides simultaneous, qualitative detection and identification of the ribonucleic acid (RNA) from the following 14 viruses and bacteria:

  1. Streptococcus dysgalactiae (Group C/G Strep)
  2. Streptococcus pyogenes (Group A Strep)
  3. Adenovirus
  4. Human rhinovirus/enterovirus
  5. Human metapneumovirus
  6. Chlamydia pneumoniae
  7. Mycoplasma pneumoniae
  8. Coronaviruses 229E, HKU1, NL63, and OC43
  9. Influenza A virus
  10. Influenza A virus A/H1-2009
  11. Influenza A virus A/H3
  12. Influenza B virus
  13. Parainfluenza viruses 1, 2, 3, and 4 (HPIV-1, HPIV-2, HPIV-3, and HPIV-4)
  14. Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)

If this rapid diagnostic test is positive for any of the viruses or bacteria listed above, it means that it has detected the virus’ or bacteria’s genetic material and the person is CURRENTLY infected with that virus or bacteria. Once the infection is gone, the RNA disappears, and that test will be negative. It is possible for more than one of these tests to be positive. This is known as a co-infection.

A positive test is considered very accurate, but it’s possible to be infected with any of these viruses or bacteria and have a negative RNA result. No test is 100% accurate, so it’s important to follow up with your physician if symptoms do not clear as expected.

A negative result may mean your symptoms were caused by a pathogen not included in the panel of tests or you have a condition not caused by a virus or bacteria.

We utilize the BIOFIRE® SPOTFIRE® Respiratory Sore Throat (R/ST) Panel Assay.

Antigen Test

We use a sample taken from a nasal swab to detect the nucleocapsid protein from:

15. COVID-19 (Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2))

If this rapid diagnostic test is positive, it means that the person is CURRENTLY infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Once the infection is gone, the antigen disappears, and the test will be negative.

A positive test is considered very accurate, but it’s possible to be infected with the virus and have a negative antigen result. Testing less than five to six days after exposure to the corona virus is likely to produce a negative antigen result. No Covid-19 test is 100% accurate, so it’s important to follow Covid-19 guidelines provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, such as social distancing.

We utilize the Sofia SARS Antigen Fluorescent Immunoassay (FIA). This test uses advanced immunofluorescence-based lateral flow technology and has been authorized by the FDA under an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for use by authorized laboratories.

Both of the tests including in the Rapid 15-in-1 Sore Throat Virus Bacteria Test are suitable for humans of any age, including infants.

What It Is Not

The IC Labs Rapid 15-in-1 Sore Throat Virus and Bacteria PCR Test is not an antibody test. It does not reveal if you have already been exposed to an infection by detecting the presence of antibodies in a person’s blood or serum. Antibody testing is not typically used to diagnose a current infection as it takes the body some time to produce antibodies. Although it can be performed in minutes, it is not a rapid antigen test.

It will not tell you how likely you are to catch or spread respiratory pathogens, or how serious your illness might be.

This test is not a respiratory infection culture. It does not test for Bordetella parapertussis or Bordetella pertussis. If you suspect whooping cough (Bordetella parapertussis or pertussis), consider our Rapid 15-in-1 Respiratory Virus and Bacteria PCR Test.
